ProSPER.Net Joint Meetings: General Assembly and Board Meeting

ProSPER.Net members gathered in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, for the 12th ProSPER.Net General Assembly and 18th Board Meeting, hosted by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) on 23 October, 2018. The ProSPER.Net Secretariat would like to express our appreciation to UTM and their team for their commitment and outstanding support to make the meeting successful!

The Secretariat reported on the network activities and collaboration with partners, and lead members reported on the progress of the joint research projects. New membership applications were reviewed and approved, and 15 members were elected to serve as the Board for two years from October 2018. During the breakout session, the members discussed mobility programmes, contributions to the implementation of the SDGs, and international recognition and visibility.

The 4th ICLCA (International Conference on Low Carbon Asia & Beyond) was held back-to-back with the ProSPER.Net Joint Meetings (24-26 October, 2018), which brought together researchers and multi-stakeholders from academia, government and private sectors to share knowledge and experiences relating to the transformation towards low-carbon development in Asia. ProSPER.Net joined the ICLCA as a conference partner and Dr. Kazuhiko Takemoto, Director of UNU-IAS, gave a presentation on the implementation of the SDGs within the international community and in Japan. Bangkok Forum 2018: Future Sustainable Asia

Hosted by Chulalongkorn University and the Korean Foundation for Advanced Studies, the Bangkok Forum, the first international conference on social sustainability held in Thailand, took place from 24-25 October, 2018 at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. This year’s theme focused on ‘Integrating Knowledge for Social Sustainability’, with the aim of strengthening the region through collaborations and inclusiveness for a sustainable Asia.

ProSPER.Net held a session titled ‘Development of a Framework for the Local Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ where the panellists shared their findings from implementation of the ProSPER.Net joint project for localising the SDGs in Japan (Keio University), Thailand (Chulalongkorn University), Philippines (University of the Philippines-Diliman), and India (TERI School of Advanced Studies). 2018 ProSPER.Net Leadership Programme

With close to 100 applications coming from all corners of the Asia-Pacific region, twelve participants have been selected to participate in the upcoming 2018 ProSPER.Net Leadership Programme on ‘Leadership for Urban Sustainable Development’, to be held next month at RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia). Online Consultation on the Draft UNESCO Position Paper on the Future of Education for Sustainable Development

What makes people act for sustainable development? How can education help make the transformation?

UNESCO invites concerned stakeholders and the public to review the draft UNESCO position paper on the future of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and share their comments by 19 November, 2018. The UNESCO position paper on the future of ESD reflects on where the work of ESD stands amidst new emerging contexts and proposes the way forward for the 2020-2030 period. Call for Papers for Special Issue of SJoR: Study and Practice of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals

Sustainability: The Journal of Record (SJoR) will publish a special issue focusing on the study and practice of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the learning foundations necessary to achieve the SDGs and create sustainable well-being societies. The call is for articles that focus on higher education planning and policy; leadership and team building; organisational change; and the core competencies (skills, knowledge, values, and habits of mind) that cut across four main domains in higher education – content, pedagogy, modelling, and assessment—to implement and achieve the SDGs. Submissions are due 30 November, 2018. Read more


Good Life Goals

Launched by the global change agency Futerra and the UN 10YFP Sustainable Lifestyles and Education (SLE) Programme, the Good Life Goals is a set of actions for individuals around the world to help support the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Highlighting the vital role of individual action, the Good Life Goals lay out 85 ways in which anyone, anywhere, can contribute. A range of materials to help stakeholders explore and communicate around the Good Life Goals is available here.

Making the Connections: A Teachers’ Network Puts ESD into Practice

In this feature article from UNESCO Bangkok, three participants of the project ‘Sustainability Begins with Teachers in Southeast Asia’ share their ESD stories from Cambodia, Indonesia and Lao PDR. The article also includes a link to an ESD guidebook for teacher educators, ‘Integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Teacher Education in South-East Asia: A Guide for Teacher Educators’ which was developed through the project.
