With over 140 years of contribution to regional teacher training, MUE now serves as a vital global hub for institutes of higher learning in the Tohoku (North-Eastern) region of Japan. MUE is also involved as a member in the UNESCO Associated School project, and serves as an Regional Centre of Expertise on ESD (RCE) acknowledged by the United Nations University. Through ProSPER.Net, MUE addresses global challenges through Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The Center for Disaster Education & Future Design (CDEFD), established under MUE’s Research System following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, promotes education for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in collaboration with MUE’s laboratory schools, local boards of education and global partners through research and development and training for various stakeholders in DRR.
