Sophia University

OVERVIEW

Sophia University was founded by the Jesuits in 1913, with the mission to build bridges between Japan and the world. The university has been a pioneer of international education in Japan and has grown to be one of the foremost of Japan’s private universities with a student body of 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students and more than 1,400 teaching staff members.

Sophia University has 9 undergraduate faculties with 29 departments, and 10 graduate schools with 25 programs. Faculty members contribute to research in the humanities, social sciences, environmental studies, natural sciences and engineering, etc. The Sophia graduates are highly regarded as leaders in the global workplace at multinational companies and international organizations.

Sophia University was recently chosen for a series of subsidy programs being implemented by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to internationalize universities in Japan, including the Top Global Universities Project and the Global 30 Project.

COURSES

Sophia University is a comprehensive urban research university with nine faculties and ten graduate schools on a single campus, and we have continuously advanced interdisciplinary research and postgraduate education across the academic and professional disciplines.

Sophia University has established and developed courses and programs to promote interdisciplinary courses. For instance, the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, the Graduate School in Global Studies, the Graduate School of Human Sciences, and the Graduate Program in Science and Technology provides English-taught degree programs as well as advanced education and interdisciplinary research opportunities to graduate students and promotes academic research integration across disciplines.

CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMMES

Sophia University encourages researchers to conduct interdisciplinary and innovative research across academic and professional fields. Research in Priority Areas at Sophia University are: (1) Research on disaster-related issues threatening human dignity, (2) Research dealing with religion and ethics, (3) Research on the sustainability of global environment and human society, (4) Research on Japanese culture and the dissemination of Japanese culture to a worldwide audience, and (5) Fundamental research with the potential to inspire next generation science and technology.

Based on these themes and areas, Sophia University has promoted sustainability research. For instance, the Institute for the Studies of the Global Environment focused on sustainability research and developed the Sophia Research Branding project. This project is an integrative and trans-disciplinary research initiative under the leadership of the president of Sophia University.

Also, in order to foster the understanding of the concept “To consider our world and the future through the U.N activities,” Sophia University has organized events and sessions by inviting officials leading professionals from the United Nations and other organizations around the world.
